Ak Altyn Hotel Ashgabat Reviews
Comfortable hotel in residential area Sep 14, 2013
Hotel Ak Altin is only about 20 minutes driving from the international airport. Which was very handy as we had a late arrival (around midnight). Ak Altyn means ‘white gold’ (= cotton). It is a somewhat anonymous building in a green residential area. Just outside the city center. I read somewhere it is 3 km from the center. We only walked it once, after a hot, tiring day, it took us about half an hour. Easy, flat walking on pedestrian paths. Just be aware we did hardly spot any street signs, so count the blocks on your city map!!
Spacious hotel lobby, friendly English speaking staff at the reception desk. Check in went on smoothly. The hotel does have elevators. I was staying in room 520. A spacious, well appointed room. Clean, as was the bathroom. A comfortable bed, television, safety box, fridge (with minibar, limited selection). One lamp was not working. The a/c was working very good. In the bathroom a hairdryer and amenities as soap, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion. Also disposable slippers and a shoe cleaning cloth.
Remarkable: I was staying on a non-smoking floor, but an ashtray and matches were provided in the room.
From the room a nice view on the mountains and some (at night spectacular lighted) buildings. As well a view on the hotel’s pool and outside bar (one night the music was pretty loud, but it stopped not too late, around 11 pm).
Although we were staying here for two nights, I only had breakfast once (due to an early departure). Breakfast in buffet style was well provided. A good choice of rolls, fresh fruit, cheese, eggs, etc.
Price of a beer at the bar USD 6, expensive compared to restaurants where we went.
In the hotel you find the offices of the British and the German embassy. And you will find plenty of photos and lecture about the president, mister Berdymukhamedov.
As far as I know the hotel doesn’t have an own website (it is not on their business card, there is an e-mail address: firstname.lastname@example.org . Wifi available for USD 5 an hour (didn’t use it).
The Ak Altin is not a very special place, but a good comfortable choice in Ashgabat!
