Aire and Calder Navigation Feb 03, 2017
I walked on the Aire and Calder Navigation from Castleford to Knottingley. On this stretch the towpath only runs along the Castleford Cut and from Ferrybridge to Knottingley. It wasn't my favourite stretch on the Navigation as I had to take a number of diversions which kept me away from the riverbank.

The Aire and Calder Navigation (and the River Aire) played a crucial role in the town's industrial activity over past two or three centuries including shipbuilding, glass works and coal mining. Today the Navigation is still used for transporting goods (particularly gravel and petroleum productions) and for leisure.
