Not Just Desserts... May 18, 2012
Location, location. That is the outstanding feature of Ai Te Tartufi, sitting as it does on Piazza Navona right next to Bernini’s splendid Fountain of Four Rivers. It was our last meal in Italy and though we figured there would be a premium, decided to splurge. A good choice, because the prices weren’t crazy, the food quite good and the service great fun – one last frantic waiter constantly on the move attempting to satisfy every request.

What reeled us in was a brief interaction with the polished maître d', though it would be difficult to conceive of a host who wasn’t poised and capable in English at such high profile digs. Regardless, we never felt gullible and the restaurant provided a good return on the steeper prices from the vibrant atmosphere on the piazza. As time was ticking away for opportunities at cultural immersion, Kim and Eric decided to immerse themselves in some Campari, an Italian apèritif. Kim let me sample hers, and it tasted like orange bitters – I’ve heard it takes some getting used to and would quickly agree.

I went for some spaghetti off of the specials list to manage the price tag, and it was really quite good. Service was excellent and entertaining, so it is easy to pass a long a recommendation...though the name translates as "house of tarufo", there is much beyond just desserts here!

Customer service leaves a lot to be desired. I remember a waitress actually cursing me in Firenze (after the main course) because I told her I wanted to order dessert (curse bcos it was extra work for her - she had to fetch me the menu again, LOL!)
