An unrestored ahu Nov 12, 2016
On our second morning on Rapa Nui we headed out of town on a full day tour, following the beautiful south coast of the island, with great views as we travelled and several stops at fascinating sites in very picturesque settings. Our first was at Vaihu, the site of Ahu Hanga Te’e, a platform which once held eight moai. These now lie face down in the same position they were left in when they were knocked down; many of them have broken necks as the neck is the weakest part of the statues. Their pukao, being cylindrical, rolled away when the moai fell and are scattered around (some were even recovered from the sea).

In front of this ahu there is a large circle of stones that would have been used for ceremonial purposes – one of the best examples of such a circle on the island. A low fence indicates that you mustn’t enter the circle – as everywhere, I was surprised how “low-key” the protective structures are here but I guess they need to find a balance between protection and preserving the atmosphere. It would be all too easy though for a lone visitor to cause untold damage at one of the less visited sites.
