Incan agricultural laboratory Nov 21, 2008
The archaeological site at Moray is easily accessed by taking a taxi from Urubamba (be sure to have your cab wait for you). The entrance is included in the Cusco ticket. The ruins consist of 4 circular to elliptical natural depressions that have been terraced, with the deepest at 150 m deep. Each set of circular terraces supposedly has different microclimates so the Incas could experiment with different crops and improve seeds so they could grow at different elevations and climates. The Incas built steps between the terraces by placing longer stones so they stick out and you can walk down them all the way down to the center of the deepest one. You can see what looks like irrigation canals running down the terraces.

You really get a sense of how big the site is from the very bottom – and it even feels a little warmer down there. On the hike back up, try to imagine you are an Inca farmer (or engineer) carrying up a load of corn and see how many levels you make before you need to stop and rest ;) The site is at approximately 3500 meters (~11480 ft) in elevation so don't be surprised if you get winded.
