Thoughts on Agadir

I went to Morocco in June for a total of 15 days, 13 of which were spent in Agadir.I came to Morocco expecting something completely different to anything I had experienced before. I expected spices, souques, complex symbolic writing, street sellers, continual pestering from the locals; basically, something completely and utterly different from the westernised culture I was used to in the UK. In Marrakech this is exactly what I got. Agadir, on the other hand, could quite easily have been Spain…

Even though I'm 50% moroccan I'd never been to Morocco before the summer of 04. That was the first time I met my cousins on my dad's side of the family and it was a great experience and I had such a good time in a really beautiful country!

Back in Agadir

Agadir was my home base off and on from 1996 to 2000.  Since 2000 I've made 5 trips back here... and now I'm back again--this time scouting out job opportunities... I guess there's just something magnetic about this place. Ironically, Agadir is the least "Moroccan" of all major Moroccan cities.  The old medina was destroyed by an earthquake decades ago, and the new city resembles more of a tourist beach resort--funny thing is, I'm not even a beach person! …

But most passes are climbed eventually and this one was no exception. In the morning the mountains had sheed their scary coat and greeted us with fresh, chili air and stunning views of snowcapped peaks on the eastern side. A few villages were signposted far along almost invisible dirt tracks on this side of the pass and farmers ensured that we warmed up well by sharing their steaming tea with us. Inspite of the immense beauty of this area it is not easy cycling; Empty up hill slopes only…

10/31   Happy Halloween! We’re in Morocco now, which is awesome… Our passage to Gibraltar was nice, I think, I can’t really remember anything exciting.  We arrived in the late afternoon and docked in a really nice marina.  The next day I went provisioning at a legit English grocery store and then walked around the main street for a little while with Beaker.  It was like being in England.  Some shipmates took the cable car up the rock and saw the famous apes of…

Well I guess you maybe asking yourself.... "What's with the Email Subject line Welmoet?". But this is exactly what I experienced during my surfing trip to Morocco in the Xmas break. Yes it was off to the African Continent (once again) to get some well needed sun (lily white skin needed some Vitamin D) and sand to roll around in.... I never realised how much you miss going to the beach at Xmas time until you are in the Northern Hemisphere in the freezing cold for Xmas... Who said tha…
