All you can eat traditional cuisine with a twist Oct 04, 2009
The Africa Café specialises in food from all over the African continent.

It has a very nice 'all-you-can-eat' concept. Rather than presenting the food on a buffet, you get 20 dishes served at your table. After this you can order more of whichever one you liked best.

The menu changes every couple of months, and features delicacies like Malawi Mbatata Balls, Congo salad with jungle dressing or Congolese spinach.

The interior is wonderfully decorated, with each room a different African 'theme'.

The restaurant also operates a small souvenir shop selling curios made by local artists.

All in all the restaurant is worth a visit. Don't expect to meet any locals though.

The Africa Cafe is a fun, energetic taste of Africa. The restaurant is staffed by employees from all different countries within Africa. The dishes served also represent several different varieties including Ndebele, Zulu and Xhosa. Your meal is served family style and it is basically a set menu...meaning you receive some of every item on the menu and you can order seconds of any item you especially enjoyed. The food quality is excellent and extremely varied.

The restaurant itself is in a 3 story building and is decorated with arts and crafts from local artisans. Several of the pieces are for sale in the gift shop on the main floor.

The best treat of all is at some point during your meal, all of the servers will perform local/traditional will give you goosebumps and leave you begging for more.

Have FUN!!

Summary - a good intro spot for tourists.

Africa Cafe offers a nice intro into the cooking and food of Africa. You are served a 16 course tasting meal (called the African Feast) of dishes from around Africa, though mostly from tribes in southern and eastern africa.

You won't find many locals there, mostly tourists (and the odd tour bus too), but I like it as a way of introducing foreigners to a wide range of tastes and styles in a short space of time.

The food is well prepared (even if it is pretty basic) and you can eat as much as you want (you can re-order and of the dishes when you get to the end). Some of the highlights include a mango chicken dish and small balls of sweet potato with cinnamon crusted with sesame seeds.

Would I go again - absolutely. Would I go every month - not a chance.

In SA terms it is quite pricey (about R170 a head - £13), but that does include all food, dessert and coffee.
