Ski in Africa Jun 12, 2011
Afri-Ski is situated in the Maluti Mountains of Lesotho. It is about 5 hours drive from JHB and it’s one of only 2 “ski resorts” in Southern Africa. The reason why i say “ski resorts” is because it is NOTHING like what you would find in the northern hemisphere. They have a 1km ski slope & lift and the season is about 3 months long (June – Aug). They have to rely on the snow making machine for the slope, as the snowfall is not that great in Africa.

The last time i went there was in 2007, and it looked like a construction site. Not sure how much have changed over the last couple of years. There are a few self catering lodges available, a pub and restaurant.

You need to take everything you’ll need, as they didn’t had a general shop, so even the most basic things you’ll need to take with. There are a lot of accommodation options available, backpackers, 1, 2, 3 bedroom self-catering apartments & luxury houses. The decor is beautiful and gives a warm feeling. It is also wise to fill the car up at Fouriesburg (South Africa) or in Butha-Buthe (Lesotho), no filling stations are available after Butha-Buthe.

The restaurant was poorly managed the time i was there. The food was average and the service shocking. The bar had a good vibe and we enjoyed spending time there!

The Ski shop was great, very professional, they had everything you’ll need and the prices were reasonable. The have Austrian Partners who are responsible for everything re the ski operations. The also "import" Austrian ski instructors every season, they were amazing, professional, helpful and dare i say... patient :)

Afri-Ski also host the annual Kings Cup, which is a major attraction for eager skiers and snowboarders.

Would i recommend Afri-Ski leasure Kingdom? Maybe...but only if you’re from South Africa and want a cheaper option to experience a ski-resort. BUT i would rather recommend that you save a bit longer and go for the real thing in Europe, US or NZ. I wouldn’t pay to go there again, if i get invited and i have nothing better to do for the weekend, yes, then i would go.
