Like the geese we are migrating south for the winter

The glorious days of summer in Europe are over, now we will survive and enjoy winter in the Low Countries

A bit of travel during a lot of science...

Living in Brussels we are at the centre of an iron web stretching across continents. Every day I roll along the rails to work in Leuven, and when it comes time to travel the parallel bars run to London, Paris, Amsterdam and beyond. And every now and again we have a day to spend exploring our new city.

In the latest chapter of our lives, Lydia and I have packed up our all our worldly belongings, said goodbye to our dear friends in Australia and America and are beginning afresh in Belgium. What wonderful adventures await us in the Old World?

One of the delights of Belgium is the ability to take short trips around Europe.

Once again I am adrift on a gentle breeze, but this time I am hand in hand with my Lydia, and that makes all the difference...

My third set of job interviews, with Lydia by my side to check out the science and lifestyle of our potential new homes - Montreal, Belgium, Ireland and London. Extra trips back to give talks and check out universities, a conference in Porto, and a few extra days sightseeing in Denmark, Netherlands and Luxembourg.

In which Lydia and I meet up with John to explore the Ukraine and Moldova by train, bus and boat.

A long weekend spent in Nevada and Arizona. Three nights of the decadence of Las Vegas, a day at the Grand Canyon, a day at the Valley of Fire, and a day exploring the elegant and tacky hotels of the Strip.

A week in Keystone Colorado at a conference on Immune tolerance in transplantation and autoimmunity, a chance to play in the snow and catch up with old friends.

In which we venture with great trepidation into the American cruise culture. A relief from the culture shock will be gained by visits to Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Aruba, Bonaire, Grenada and St Kitts and Nevis.

A weekend in San Francisco.

Two weeks spent around Ecuador, to the Galapagos Islands, Spanish Colonial cities, pre-Inca ruins in the Andes, and a brief trip into the Amazon rainforest.

A quick trip to Helsinki for a conference, with a stop over at Paris and Tallinn.

From Port Rupert, British Columbia, to Juneau, Alaska.

A weekend in Portland, Oregon

Getting engaged in Dubrovnik, visiting Montenegro, Athens, Corfu, Albania and Vienna.

From Seattle to Victoria, British Columbia. To the Yucatan Peninsular in Mexico to see flamingoes in Celestun, Chitzen Itza and cenotes in the forest. Disneyland, Caltech and Stanford in California.

From Cairo into the Sahara to Luxor, visiting temples then sailing and catching the train back to Cairo. Across the Sinai peninsular, across to Jordan, visiting Petra, the Dead Sea and Jerash. Beirut and Baalbek in Lebanon, then Damascus, Palmyra, Crac des Chevaliers and Aleppo in Syria. Across into Turkey, the underground city, Kas, Troy, Gallipoli and Istanbul. To Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria on the Oriental Express, before a brief stop in Frankfurt, Germany.
