Good Local Domincan Food Dec 22, 2010
The Caribbean does not stand out as being a home to fine cuisine, however, the more I travel around the region, the more I discover that there is more to the regional food than rice and beans. In the Domincan Republic they mix their very old Hispanic roots with local flare and ingredients. The main national dishes in there are Mofongo, which is a ground plantain dish with fried pig skins chopped and mixed in. It has the consistency of a bread stuffing with a subtle crunch and is very tasty. The other national dish is Sancocho which is a hearty meat stew with unique spice combinations. Other side dish that I enjoyed was a deep-fried minced chiken dish that was delicious, and of course, who can forget thei excellent fresh local seafood. All of these local dishes are best at Adrian Tropical, which has a few locations on the Island. The one on Washington Blvd is the one the locals go to is you want to avoid the crowds.
