Adel Overview

Adel is a small town of just under 4000 (up 14% since 2000) located just North of Interstate 80 along US Highway 6. It's close proximity to Des Moines, the state capitol, is probably the reason for its growth. Adel was incorporated in 1847 as Penoach and is the oldest town in Dallas County as well as the county seat. Dallas County was named for George M. Dallas, the Vice-President under James Polk. The Dallas County Courthouse is a very impressive building using a French style of architecture and was dedicated in 1902. Significant residents of the town include the 21st Governor of Iowa George Clarke and a former winner of the Heisman Trophy, Nile Kinnick (who is also Clarke's grandson).

Adel also has a nice historical museum.

Adel opted to keep the brick streets installed many years ago and it adds an old-time flavor to the Public Square Historic District; which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
