Poor despite good location Feb 04, 2017
This is a difficult review to write for 2 reasons. The first is that the owner of this establishment does not take kindly to criticism as he has demonstrated in some of his responses to previous critical reviews. The second is that although our initial impressions of this place were exceedingly bad, we felt that despite these this hostelry was not so bad after all.

We arrived at the place late at night, having warned the owner, P, that we would be doing so, and receiving his approval of this. The kindly night watchman showed us the room that had been allocated for us. When we entered the en-suite bathroom, we found that the floor of the shower tray was not only filthy but also badly damaged (cracked and punctured: see illustration). We asked for a different room, and the watchman called the owner, who arrived at his hostelry within a few minutes. When we pointed out why we did not like his room, he became angry and told us that if we were going to be critical, we should leave (it was at least 10.30 pm), and find alternative accommodation. We were very tired, and this seemed quite unreasonable. His unfriendly, inhospitable attitude upset my wife and I greatly. When we pointed this out to his sister a day or so later, she tried to make out that we had been unreasonable. Whatever happened to the concept that the customer is always right? Whatever happened to the innkeeper’s approach to customer relations? Had it been much earlier in the day, we would have walked out immediately, but it was late at night and we had no idea whether or not it would be possible to find alternative accommodation. And, as we pointed out to him, one of us was suffering from an injured leg.

Eventually, P relented and offered us another room, which was intact. We took this and warily paid up front as the rules of the house required this. Cash was required, but we had to ask for a receipt as this was not offered spontaneously.

Adam’s Old Inn lives up to its name. Some things were old, and in crying need of a little more care and attention. For example, plumbing in the bathroom was quirky. The shower emitted very little water. On the first day, this was uncontrollably hot, and on the remaining 5 days of our stay the water never warmed up at all. In addition, two of the room’s four light fittings were non-functional, one looking beyond repair. Luckily, the air-conditioner was most efficient, even if rather noisy.

Neither soap nor rinsing mugs were available in the bathroom. We were told to buy our own. Toilet paper was available, but only after we had asked for it. Sheets and towels were changed.

This place is beautifully located in the heart of old Fort Cochin. With a modest investment, it could rival the many other similarly priced guest accommodations in the same street. Breakfast was not supplied.

Apart from P, who did become friendlier as the days went on, the remaining members of the staff were friendly and gracious.

Really? It sounds (and looks) like a dump to me. Haven't been to India, so don't know what's to expect there, but - please?? Thanks for posting this honest review!
