Adaaran Club Rannalhi South Male Atoll Reviews
Affordable Maldives resort with a few minor deficiencies Nov 18, 2010
We booked this hotel through a travel agent on Expedia.de. 15 days, all inclusive, in a water bungalow, with transfer to and from the Male International Airport with the flight from Germany for 3000 Euro/person, or $4000/person.
We we're transfered by speed boat from the airport to the resort. This worked out really well, since there were representatives of the hotel at the airport.
The Adaaran Club Rannalhi Resort is located in the South Male Atoll (Kaafu). It's a small island 300 m by 100 m with two-story-bungalows on land and 19 water bungalows on stilt surrounded by the house reef.
The water bungalows are located on the opposite side of the island, away from bar, restaurant, arrival dock, etc. Therefore it's nice and quiet, except for the waves and an occasional noisy neighbor.
There are two rooms to each of the bungalows. The room is fitted with a bathroom (shower, sink, toilet, hair dryer) and a main living/sleeping room. There's a water heater for coffee or tea, a TV set with DVD player and surround sound, 2 chairs and a table, safe, desk, minibar and very comfortable bed with a semi hard mattress. The pillows were hard too, which was the only bad thing about it.
The view from the bungalow was amazing, at all times. Unblocked view over the low waters to the house reef all the way to the horizon. A different view is offered by the 1x1 m ocean floor window, through which we were able to spy on many fishes, morays and manta rays over the course of 2 weeks.
On our private deck we had two sun chairs, two chairs and a table. There was also a small rack to hang our wet clothes on. We had partial shade and or sun all day on it.
On our way to breakfast/lunch and dinner we would pass by the Nika lounge/bar, the spa, the gift shop/jewelry shop, the big bar and the front desk. Everything is located in palm roof buildings or pavilions. The staff is mostly helpful, depending on their knowledge of English. They do speak a little bit of Italian, Russian, German, as well.
All meals were buffet style, which is more than okay, we thought. There was always a selection of salad, vegetables, rice, pasta, beef, fish (lots of it), and the amazing crispy bread (like potato chips almost) and the dessert!! OMG! Best.thing.ever. Variety, variety, variety.
Pro's and con's:
The water sports shack: snorkel gear, canoe, catamaran, and wind surfing gear rentals. Had a really friendly and helpful South African girl helping us out and pointing out great snorkeling locations.
Water bungalows are away from noisy birds that live in the trees around the main land. Access to the water from the deck via ladder. Perfect for snorkeling.
Excursions were offered by the hotel, the water sports and dive shop.
Our waiter was less than helpful for the first couple of days. We were suppose to get water/beer/soda/wine with our meals. We ended up pouring our own water on a few occasions because he was nowhere to be found. He did step it up after we gave him his tip in advance.
Our AC was broken twice and we had to ask more than once to get someone to come over and fix both times. (It was incredibly hot inside the room when it wasn't working and leaving the windows open wasn't an option, because the draft would have probably shattered one or more of the windows.)
After the first week the room service was lagging too, but after you asked you would receive your refills on free coffee packets, sugar etc. The tip in advance did also speed things up.
The biggest con was that All Inclusive did in fact NOT mean All Inclusive.
It meant free water/beer/soda/wine at the main restaurant during meal hours.
At the bar it meant free water/juice/salty coffee and beer. So me not being a beer person was more than outraged by this.
A cocktail of the day for free would have been nice, but there was no such thing.
There was no free water in the room. If you wanted water you had to buy a 1.5 liter bottle at the bar for $4.50/bottle.
(We ended up paying an extra $550 dollars at the end of our stay for the one excursion we booked, the snorkeling gear rental, and all the water we had to buy which was between 1-2 bottles a day.)
So the All Inclusive part of the "bargain" was in fact a joke. I guess I just expected more for the money we paid, but I guess half of that went to where you are and how amazing the Maldives are so service isn't something you need when you're in paradise. ;)
We did enjoy our stay and over-looked the cons after a few days because all in all you are in a very special and secluded place with things like the reef live that you won't find everywhere in the world.
We had an amazing time snorkeling the house reef and saw soooo many amazing sea creatures, like sharks, clown fish, doctor fish, parrot fish, sea stars, sea cucumbers, giant clams, sea turtles, morays, manta rays, etc.
