A must when in San Ignacio Jun 03, 2013
This was an amazing excursion. It is a must do. I would recommend going with a local tour company and smaller group. We did the tour with Maya Tour and our guide was Aaron. He was so great. As we went through the cave, he took us off the beaten path. He really tried to make us understand what the Mayans were thinking when living in the caves. The most amazing part is coming out of the cave and seeing all the green. Your eyes adjust to the darkness so it is kind of surreal. After seeing some of the large groups, I am so happy ours was only a group of 4.

Im not a person to do tours, I like off-the trail stuff, but this was the best tour you can ask for. It's regulated by the government, so its well maintained. It's an incredible experience & journey as my Mayan guide took me through the jungles & rivers in Belize. Ending up in a cave...and through the cave seeing Mayan relics that haven't been touched in over 1,000 years, skulls, and the pinnacle of the tour...a well preserved skeleton of a 14-year old girl. Highly recommended, a must see if you're in Belize.

The trip usually starts with a short bus ride to the boarder of the nature reserve. As there are no roads leading to the cave, you will have to hike to the entrance for about 45 Minutes. The terrain is mainly flat, so it is not such a big thing. Once there you will get a helmet and a head lamp and head into the cave. Right away you will first have to swim through a small pool to get into the cave. Once in there you will be lead by certified guides farther into the cave. You will see beautiful stalactites and stalagmites as well as many Mayan artifacts. The beauty about this is, that the archeologists have left all the artifacts inside the cave in their original location. You can also find skulls and skeletons of humans sacrificed to the Mayan goods of the underworld. The trip is fantastic and will take around 5 hours of which you will spend around 2 in the cave. It is not for the unfit or very obese people, as there are some part where you have to climb or squeeze through small openings. But if you can take a little exercise, it is well worth the trip.
