Mountain Top Citadel Jan 12, 2010
Acrocorinth is Ancient Corinth’s acropolis, and the greatest in all of Greece. This strategic location has been held and besieged by the Greeks, Crusaders, Franks, Ottomans and Venetians. Today it is a little known site, that warrants only a single paragraph mention in most guidebooks. I believe it to be the ‘Machu Pichu’ of Europe, an overgrown city high on a mountain peak, and is definitely worth a visit.

Easily visible from Ancient Corinth, the Acrocorinth is accessible by foot the museum, taking just over an hour. In hindsight I’d recommend taking a taxi to the citadel entrance, then hiking back down instead. Directly opposite the Acrocorinth, is a small fort on a remote hilltop. First hiking to this location affords great views of the citadel and its gates. The Citadel’s three huge gates wind up the mountain, offering a line of retreat should one fall. Even once through the last gate and inside the citadel, the Frankish tower looms high above on a precarious ledge. Walking around the citadel’s walls in an anticlockwise direction offers fantastic views, on a clear day both sides of the Isthmus of Corinth can be seen, highlighting why this was such a strategic position.

The Ancient Corinth museum sells an excellent book on the Acrocorinth in its gift shop. If visiting ancient Corinth (which takes around two hours at most), a trip to the Acrocorinth is a must.
