Ethiopian Jewel in the heart of Amsterdam Aug 12, 2009
For a truly unique and wonderful experience you have to eat at Abyssinia. Away from the regular tourist traffic it is a true neighborhood place. They always have a crowd, but it is easy to get in. On the weekend it is a good idea to have a reservation. The atmosphere is quaint and rustic. The food is a wonderful mix of flavors and textures from Africa. Even a vegetarian can find something. It may not look like you are getting much food, but it is very filling. Everyone at a table eats from a shared platter. There are no utensils, you eat with Enjera (a kind of pancake), but if necessary you can ask for a knife and fork. They offer a selection of ethnic beers and South-African wines. This is a true must if you are looking for something other than another tourist restaurant in Amsterdam.

We had dinner there last night with a friend who just moved to Amsterdam. It was fantastic as always. We tried the desert for the first time. It was unbelievable. It was a speacial ice cream with honey and nuts. WONDERFUL!

Thanks for the info. I'm unfamiliar with Ethiopian food but I used the web link you provided and looked at the restaurant's menu. The dishes sound tasty. Is the food hot-spicy?
