First shoots in Abu Dhabi

Bon Jovi's coming to town! For a "Lost Highway Tour", normally the show of the singers took place in Dubai, only severals (can be caounted with fingers) come to Abu Dhabi. And to my luck that Bon Jovi is one of the few:). On 20th May, 2008, the concert took place outdoor, behind the biggest and most expensive hotel ever built in the world - Emirates Palace. The stage was prepared and the show started at 21:00 pm. There are 3 sections of seats or standing positions. First is in front of the ...

Woke up around 8AM and showered…Mark was off to meet w/the Chancellor over the faculty housing crisis.  Went downstairs and read the paper until he returned.  Read an interesting editorial berating Bush & Kerry because of an opinion that both were born with a silver spoon in their mouth and couldn’t relate to the ‘common man’.  I found this interesting, not because I disagreed, but because sheikhs rule these people, an effective monarchy! We hit the road about 11...

View from our unit is so Abu Dhabi.  When I look outside the window there is no denying that I am in a different country.  I don't exactly know how they call their houses or if there is a correct term for it but I call it "square houses".  This is my view, plus the coastline far, far away and I don't know how many mosques, I seemed to lost count.  I would love to move in the other side of the building, where the view looks like Makati (the business district in the Philippi...

What a great flight...not.
posted by:

We were delighted to have bulkhead seats on our flight between Manchester and Abu Dhabi with Etihad. Mark and I are both pretty tall so any extra leg room is appreciated! We settled into our seats (after I'd emptied the magazine pockets in front of us so I could fit my book - Wicked - and a bag of sweets into it!) and buckled in. Then a group of 6 young guys - who it turned out where heading to Pattaya for 3 weeks - boarded and were seated directly behind us. They were exceptionally loud from...

To go and to see Al Ayn

I took a day tour to Al Ain with a local tour agent in Abu Dhabi named Cyclone. http://cyclonetours.araax.com/UAE/CoInfo.aspx The cost for their programs are more expensive than other tour agent that I've investigated, but the good thing with this one, is that they'll provide a 4-wheel drive for max 5 people per one trip. It means that the trip schedule is quite flexible. Even the first time I book for the weekend tour, they mentioned they don't have any.. but later on the girl from t...

A lot of different version of arabic sweets or baklava as the most common name. Normally made of phyllo dough - a thin, crisp pastry, filled with peanut or pistacchio or macadamia nuts and sweetened with syrup and sugar.... History of this food is not really known, but it was originated from Central Turkey, altough the oldest recorded of this baklava recipes was found in Chinese cookbook!.

...Kyle announces loudly as we enter the walkway to the 777 that will take us away from this land where we have been thoroughly spoiled for the last three weeks.  Conveniently, we were escorted through security from curbside directly to gate 22, saving us more than an hour in waiting lines (we’ve been joking all through the trip about how to become an Emirati VIP) and now we finally find ourselves waiting to board the plane…in a que with other “travelers with small children.  ...

Abu Dhabi is more of a conservative city then Dubai.  I didn't find much to see there expect theEmirates Palace hotel and the Marina Mall was nice...Like Dubai, they have many "souk" areas for gold and jewelry.

On checking with Gulf Air we find that our flight has been brought forwards by two hours so we reluctantly forego our planned leisurely sun bathe around the pool in Giza and re-organise our pick up with Travel Talk.  I would really recommed this group for travel in Egypt as their pick up and delivery service before and after the tour is superb and there is no stress on our part. We also find that instead of a through flight we are now stopping in Bahrain and changing planes with a 1 1/2...
