Abu Simbel May 01, 2011
No visit to Egypt is complete without visiting Abu Simbel which is near the southern border of Egypt, about 40+ miles from the Sudanese border. This magnificent piece of history highlights the architectural prowess of the Egyptians during the reign of King Rameses as a way to show his might and power. I stayed at the Seti Hotel which is a beautiful resort-like hotel with beautiful grounds and landscaping. If you arrive on a Friday, like I did, the town would be virtually dead because all the tourists who had come to the area via the Nile Cruises would have already left by then. There is a captivating light show at Abu Simbel at night, but be aware that they will only do the show if there are at least 3 people in the audience! The best time to visit the Abu Simbel temple itself is before sunrise so that you are there to catch the first rays of the sun making sharp long shadows on the immense statues of Rameses and his beloved wife Nefetari.
