Abode Santa Monica Reviews
Aug 12, 2007
i had to try this place once i found out that the designer studied under frank gehry. turned out that the whole dining experience was great.
first, the service was just impeccable. the host was very accommodating and even moved a heat lamp for us. (btw, the indoor design of the bar and restaurant areas were lovely, but we opted to dine outside because it was a lovely summer eve.) our server was also very nice and gave reliable recommendations.
second, the location is not bad. it is in a courtyard so there is no real people watching to be had. but the courtyard makes for an intimate dining experience even though it is just a few steps away from the santa monica pier. abode is located right behind tengu (which used to be the location for ivy on the shore). while they do have valet parking, the public parking structure on 2nd and colorado is a cheap, safe and close alternative. the space is also very nice -- the design uses clean lines, and makes great use of dark wood.
third, the food. the bread was warm - fresh off the oven. i started off with the foie gras. although i have had better (this was more fatty than most), this was still very tasty, smooth and good. it was paired with warm cherry and some crisp. i also had the pork chop. the chops were juicy and good. i ended with the study of chocolate dessert -- which is a combo of truffles, a warm easter egg like chocolate (inside a real egg), chocolate wafer with strawberries, a small cup of cocoa, and a chocolate gelato. it was delicious! my friends had the corn chowder, halibut, oysters, and lobster tail. i tasted a bit of each and they were tasty! as for cocktails, they were all VERY good. a friend had the nameste (ketel one vodka with lychee and a hint of rose), and i had the blood orange mojito, which was very refreshing.
i defninitely will go back. this is a great addition to the santa monica restaurant scene!
