Aberdeen is a growing town of just over 27,000 (up 13% since 2000) located at the intersection of U.S. Highways 12 and 281 in Brown County in Northern South Dakota not far from the border with North Dakota. The area was first settled by Arikara Indians who were followed around 1700 by other tribes, predominantly the Sioux. Fur trappers came to the area to trap and to trade with the Indians between 1820 and about 1836. Aberdeen was laid out in 1881 with the arrival of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad. A railroad executive, Alexander Mitchell, was responsible for naming the towns along the rail line and named Aberdeen after his hometown of Aberdeen, Scotland. In the following years four rail lines intersected in Aberdeen making the town a rail hub. Aberdeen is home to Northern State University and Presentation College. The first hotel in the Super 8 hotel chain was built here in 1974. Aberdeen is the county seat of Brown County which was established in 1879 and was named for Alfred Brown a South Dakota Legislator. The beautiful Brown County Courthouse was completed in 1904 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
