Abercrombie Overview

Abercrombie is a tiny, shrinking town of about 260 (down 12% since 2000) located just off U.S. Highway 75 in Richland County in Southeast North Dakota near the borders with Minnesota and South Dakota. Abercrombie was founded in 1884 and was named after the fort next to the town, which was named for the fort's first commander Lieutenant Colonel John J. Abercrombie. Around the same time the Fargo and Southern Railroad came through the area. Abercrombie has 11% more men than women and a higher than average median income for the state. Abercrombie is part of the Wahpeton Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Fort Abercrombie, which was the first United States fort in what is now North Dakota is located in Abercrombie, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. There is also a nice museum here.
