Abbeville is a very pleasant town of about 12,000 (up 4% since 2000) located at the intersection of US Highway 167 and several Louisiana Highways, in Vermilion Parish in Southwest Louisiana. The land that became Abbeville was purchased by Father Antoine Megret in 1843 and was named La Chapelle after Father Megret's home in France. Abbeville is the parish seat of Vermilion Parish. Vermilion Parish has long been inhabited: First by paleo-Indians, then by the Chitimacha and Atakapa Tribes. French and Spanish explorers came through the area, and many French, Spanish, and Acadians settled here; joined later by many immigrants from Germany, Italy and Eastern Europe. Many slaves came here and remained after they achieved freedom. Much of the southern part of Vermilion Paris was devastated by Hurricane Rita and Hurricane Katrina.

Abbeville has a very nice Welcome Center to inform you about the town and the parish, and where you can obtain maps, brochures and more valuable information.

Abbeville also has an active theatre group.

You must document America more than anyone else. Another place I never heard of until now.
