Abbeville, Georgia and Wilcox County Apr 21, 2017
Abbeville is a town of 2900 (up 26% since 2000) located east of Interstate 75 at the intersection of US Highways 280 and 129 in Wilcox County in Southern Georgia. Abbeville was established in 1857 and was incorporated in 1883. Abbeville is the county seat of Wilcox County. Wilcox County was established in 1857 and was named for either Captain John Wilcox (as shown by Georgia Archives) or his son General Mark Wilcox who was a state legislator and founder of the Georgia Supreme Court and died in 1850 (as many believe). Explorer Hernando De Soto discovered the Ocmulgee River here at Abbeville in 1540, and met up with the Altamaha Indians. On 8/9 May 1865, Confederate President Jefferson Davis camped in Abbeville, one of his last actions as president before he was captured near Irwinville on the 10th. The Wilcox County Courthouse was completed in 1903 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Abbeville also has a nice library, a couple of veterans memorials, and several historic plaques talking about the history of the area. I feel it is important to remember the sacrifices made by our military and their contributions to our freedom and our way of life.
