Abbaye St Martin du Canigou Casteil Reviews
4x4 taxi - think carefully first! May 17, 2003
Polvandenwirre has done a very good entry about the monastery itself and, as I never even reached it, there's no way I am going to compete.
I am writing this solely to save you from a tourist trap in the form of a 4x4 taxi, unless you really need it. Even if you do, read the last part of this review. You will see advets for the taxi all over the place if you are in the area.
First note that there is a perfectly good bus service from Villefranche-de-Conflent or Vernet-les-Bains to Casteil, the nearest place to the monastery. Then note the information on the Abbaye's own website. '
'The Abbey is accessible by foot only, a 30-50minute walk from Casteil.
Distance from Casteil: 1600m.
Elevation: around 300m.'
Most people will be able to walk this - I could have done so easily enough if I had not been on a fair walk already that day and I am no great walker these days.
If you do need the taxi - and of course there's nothing to be ashamed of if you do - note that it's still much cheaper to take the bus to Casteil and the taxi only from there than to take the taxi, as you can do, from a longer distance.
