Worth It Sep 29, 2014
Whilst I have not actually stayed in the Abama, I have visited had a nosey around, had a meal there and even attended a wedding reception so do feel I am qualified to give my opinion.

Looking as if it would not be out of place on a Star Wars film set, the Abama (these days calling itself the Ritz-Carlton Abama) is not the cheapest hotel on the island but it is 5 star all the way.

The facility itself is exceptional with beautiful, impeccably manicured grounds and pools that look like small lakes spread throughout.

Villas are situated around the grounds and each has its own golf cart, so the uphill trek to the main hotel is no hassle. The décor is modern but warm at the same time, furnished in earthy tones.

I don't play golf but even I could tell it was a fantastic course, with lots of water but nobody around. Perhaps they were expecting Bill Clinton to turn up once again but instead they only had me. Tennis look amazing too and nobody there either.

The hotel does make out that the small bay beach at the foot of the cliffs is private which may fool the ‘tourists’ but we locals know there are NO PRIVATE beaches on the island. However as this one has nice pale sand it is little wonder they like to make out only guests can use it. Access is quite difficult and the hotel has a small cable car to take you down but the rest of us hoi polloi have to be content with scrambling down a rough road unless of course we are there as guests for some current function. Once on the beach the staff and the people taking care of the beds and umbrellas or serving drinks are friendly and attentive. They need to be with a 125ml bottle of water costing a whopping €5 but at the supermarket down the road you can buy 8 litres for €1.60!

There are several restaurants but I have only eaten in the MB that claims two Michelin stars. It was very good however I did feel on the occasion of our visit the bill was particularly expensive especially as there are a number of excellent restaurants on the island that are comparable as far as quality goes but half the price.

To summarise this is an elegant, upscale hotel that caters for Russians, French, Portuguese, Spanish as well as locals so a nice cosmopolitan atmosphere. If money was no object then I would certainly stay here or maybe I just start to save for a special occasion!
