Okay, everybody knows why they want to go to Yosemite: it’s one of the most spectacular places on earth. But here’s what you might not know, from a local’s perspective. Stay in the Park only if you have a ton of money. The hotels (and the Ahwanee is absolutely beautiful) are super expensive. Don’t stay in Oakhurst. It’s ugly and strip-malled to death. Stay in Mariposa, a tiny town about an hour’s drive from the Park entrance. The residents are friendly and there is practically no crime. If you don’t mind hostelling, stay at the Yosemite Bug Hostel. They definitely have the best dinner and breakfast. If you want a more conventional hotel, try the Mariposa Lodge or the Comfort Inn. If you are in town for lunch, go to Sal’s Taco Truck in the parking lot by the Post Office. Happy Burger is kitschy and, as they say, has “the largest menu in the Sierras.” Happy Burger also has the only decent ice cream in town. If you like good film, go to the Sixth Street Cinema. They do foreign and independent films on Friday and Saturday nights, and free admission documentaries on Thursdays. Their website is www.sixthstreetcinema.org. If you can possibly help it, don’t go to Yosemite in the summer. It’s crowded, and the waterfalls won’t be running. Spring is spectacular and winter is awesome. There’s easy skiing at Badger Pass. The only bad thing about winter is that Tioga Pass is usually closed at the first heavy snow, and you won’t be able to go to Mono Lake or Lee Vining. The high desert there is incredible.
