stopping at this cruise port. Sep 30, 2012
Lying to the west about 75 miles from the Capitol city of San Jose this city of over one hundred thousand is part of the Providence of Puntarenas, the largest province in Costa Rica. It is the main port city on the Pacific Ocean side of Costa Rica and sits on a long narrow peninsula in the Gulf of Nicoya. It is the country’s most important fishing port. Surrounded by rich natural beauty from dry forest to rain forest and from mangrove swamp to cloud forest to sub alpine grass and shrub lands, and all types of beaches this providence is home to a large variety of flora and fauna. Tourism is one of the major economic industries in today’s life. There is a boardwalk area quite near the pier where the cruise ships dock that has many shops and craft vendors. The town itself is right there with many more shops and places to eat, but not in the best economic conditions. Streets, sidewalks and paint are not well maintained but the iron bars over windows and doors seem to be in good order.
