A day trip to Mafra. Feb 21, 2018
I' d recommend a day trip to Mafra. There is a huge palace to visit there.

This palace was built by king Joao V between 1717 and 1730. Part of the building was also a monastery. Here you can visit the basilica; some reconstructions of the monks cells and a big library.

Manuel II, the last king of Portugal lived here.

The palace can only be visited on a guided tour.

On sundays afternoon a concert of carillon could be heard from the palace. The building has the largest set of carillons in the world; made up of 114 bells.

Once you visited the palace you could head to Ericeira. This is a nice seaside village perched on cliffs. It is some 10 kilometers far form Mafra. It was from there that in october 1910 king Manuel II and his mother Amelia set sail from Ericeira harbor to a life of exile in England.

Mafra lies 40 km. north-west from Lisbon and 20 km. from Sintra.

I went to Mafra from Lisbon by coach. I took one from the terminal in Campo Grande. It' s just outside the metro station. The journey took only one hour.
