Bangkok is a very easy city to get around in. Especially if you are coming in to the train station. Attached to the train station is the subway, which also runs into the Sky Train. The Sky Train is by far one of the easiest and fastest ways to get around town. If you have the balls I would recommend taking a motorcycle taxi. It's quite the experience; frightening and slightly enjoyable. Upside is it's fast and cheaper than a tuk tuk generally, downside is you feel like you're risking your life each time you get on them. Another option is to take the river taxi. It's not always the fastest, but it's a lot more scenic, but I would avoid using it during the day. Also Taxi Meters are everywhere, just remembe to never haggle over the price. Insist on a meter and if they don't want to use it, wait 3 seconds until the next one shows up.
There are lots of great places to eat out as well, but it depends on what you want. Sukhumvit Soi 38 is a mecca of delicious Thai food if you're in the area. Also the Khao Sawn area has some good cheap street food and nice Israeli joints, and cheap accomodation. I generally like to steer a bit clear of this area, other nice places to stay are guest houses on Soi Rambutri, Taewez, or on Sukhumvit. It just depends on what you're looking to do and see. As for safety Bangkok is pretty safe. The only problems I've heard of are at after hours bars around 4am when people are wasted and acting like idiots. It's a pretty fun/busy/hot city, I hope this helps. If you'd like any other info let me know. Lamphunite |

The village was beautiful though, and the river although a bit dirty was very serene. It was early evening and on our way through the village we met a lot of locals. Some were sitting outside their houses eating or just watching the night approach. Others were tending to their shrines and there were a few kids sitting by the river. They were all welcoming as always… Thailand 2007 |
