A Day Trip to North Israel Apr 09, 2012
On a recent business trip to Israel, I had an opportunity to do a day trip from Tel Aviv to the northern border of Israel - the WHOLE northern border of Israel. This was a fascinating day trip as you see so much in such a short period of time.

We left the Hotel Dan in downtown Tel Aviv around 0900 in the morning and drove north, by-passing Haifa to the most northwestern point of Israel - the town of Rosh Hanrika. This town overlooks the rocky Mediterranean coast of Israel which is much akin to the California coast. There is also a heavily fortified checkpoint there on the border with Lebanon. After a brief stop for pictures, we jumped back in the car and drove the border road due East with Lebanon out our left windows for about one hour. The terrain changed in that distance from rocky, bald hill-tops to more densely vegetated and steeper hills. As we approached the snow-covered peaks of Mt. Hermon, we stopped for a traditional Arabic lunch in a local village consisting of all of the staples: hummus, baba ganoush, etc... We then continued our journey west until we reached the Valley of Tears in the North-Eastern most corner on the border of Syria. This wide open valley introduced much heavier winds from the north. It is also littered with mine fields and destroyed tanks from the several conflicts that have used the Golan Heights as their battle grounds.

At this point you have no choice bu to turn south and travel along the Syrian and eventually the Jordanian border amidst several Israeli Defense Force Camps (we saw some Merkava tanks doing maneuvers along some muddy hills). We made a pit-stop at the Golan Heights Winery for a wine tasting and continued on to the Sea of Galilee to see where Jesus and his disciples used to fish and where Jesus, according to the Bible, walked on water. From there we crossed the river Jordan to see where John the Baptist originated the baptism ritual and then made our way back to Tel Aviv for dinner.

What a great day!!

Very interesting, but not what I would like to see on a vacation. I think I stick to Disney World instead ;)
