A dynamite dining option in downtown Portland, 555 is a fairly new venue that is garnering rave reviews in this foodie haven. The restaurant earned an award of excellence from Wine Spectator, so you know we’re talking serious elegance. Since Kim and I had never heard of this place before, we were tickled to recognize the interior once we stepped inside. Back in the mid-1990’s a friend of ours had renovated this building and made a stab at operating a combination café and bookstore. Unfortunately he went out of business rather quickly, but it is a beautiful building which the current owners have tastefully decorated.

Of course the food is the draw, and were we delighted! Our friends Ed and Kathleen not only raved about the seared peppered crusted local diver scallops, they both ordered the entrée and Kim gleefully followed suit. I opted for the hanger steak, driven by the scrumptious description of the chipotle hot sauce it is served in. A close runner up was their truffled lobster mac & cheese – a mouth watering combination of lobster in hand rolled pasta with shaved black truffles!

The food was amazing and the service impeccable. There are plenty of splendid options for fine dining in Portland, but you will truly savor a visit to 555.

Hey, Mike --- you've identified my top three choices! Can't go wrong with any of these, but here's some more info to possibly break a tie: overall, 555 is the hippest (because it is the newest), but Street & Company has the most romantic setting (cobblestone street and open kitchen). Fore Street will have the best food...but that is no slight on the others as I have never been disappointed at any of these. Enthused to learn who the winner is!

Hi Vance, I will be visiting Maine in May next year. 3 days in Bar Harbor and 1 day in Portland. We will only have one night in Portland so i'm trying to find a good restaurant to go.
I've narrowed it down to three (555 - Fore St. - Street & Co.). Which one would you recommend if you only had to choose one ?
