Go to the Promenade in Brooklyn Heights. Take the 2/3 (Red Line) to Clark Street, as you come up the elevator and exit the subway through the turn style, go straight (exit onto Clark Street). Make a right onto Clark Street, cross Hicks St. and Willow St. When you reach the end of Clark Street, you'll be at Columbia Heights. You can access the Promenade from several areas along this street. Make either a right or a left, and walk until you get to an entrance to a park. You'll see a lot of people and the streets will be blocked off that day. Plan on getting their early, bring a blanket, friends, cards, something to do. After the Promenade starts getting full, the police won't let anyone else in. Why is this such a great spot to see the fireworks? Last year Macy's had 5 or so barges from which they launch the fireworks. They position them around the city, and one is right in front of the Promenade. You also have enough visibility to see several of the other semi-synchronized shows (the other barges). Alternatively, you may try watching from the South Street Seaport (the other side of the river - in Manhattan), but I've never been there for the 4th, and don't know what it's like there, but the view should be equally as good.

Go to the South Street Seaport. Get there early. So you can watch the 4th of July fireworks! There are several retaurants and shoping in that area so it shouldnt be hard to stay around the financial district. Also in this is Wall Street and GroundZero!
