29 Diner Dec 19, 2013
The 29 Diner opened in 1949 and is a fixture in Fairfax City. It sits about ten minutes from the campus of George Mason University at the busy intersection of Fairfax Boulevard (or Lee Highway) and Chain Bridge Road. It is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 24 hours Friday through Sunday.

This is a tiny little place with six cramped booths and a counter. The food is nothing special, mainly a breakfast joint with some burgers and sandwiches thrown in. I stop by every once in a while to splurge on the French toast and scrambled eggs or grab an omelette. It is old and kind of dumpy, but that's its charm, a real 1950's diner that takes you back to a vanished era.

There are usually some oldtimers drinking their coffee and reading their newspapers during the day, maybe some drunk kids from campus squeezed in late at night for the midnight munchies. Worth checking out if you're in the area and like old diner joints. They only take cash, but there is an ATM inside. Additional parking is around back if the front slots are full.

I'll have to check the menu next time I'm there, Vance. They might need to upgrade and add it.

Definitely a classic, but a shame the food isn't better --- do they have Chicken & Waffles on the menu?
