Luxury and nice relaxing place in the middle of Manhattan Aug 27, 2011
Iv never been to a place like 230%fifth before and it was just amazing! Relaxing to sitt and drink and look at the skyline of the Empire State and downtown Manhattan on the other side! The drinks are strong and expensive but compared to Norways prize level its still cheap and i loved that!

Should be hard to get into but we both had an amazing time on a Sunday evning!

Highly recomended!

Great view from the roftop Sep 19, 2011
If you happen to be in Manhattan and want to have a drink with a great view of the Empire State Building you have to check this place.

The location (hence the name ) is at 230 Fifth Avenue, cross street is 27th.

Prices for drinks are pretty average for New York (about $10 - $15) and if you go there after office hours (but before it gets crowded on Friday /Saturday) you're able to sit on a table without having to purchase the kinda common 2 bottles minimum...

It's a great place to host small parties or just for a drink with friends if you are looking for a casual/elegant atmosphere

Just what you expect a new york bar to be like Aug 12, 2010
I love this place. We all sat out on the rooftop on a chilly April evening overlooking the Empire State Building. It felt just like the cool new york bars you see in the films.

Lovely atmosphere Aug 25, 2010
The entrance to this top NYC lounge is free but you do have to be well dressed and the queues get fairly large after 10pm. The lounge has two sections one is the penthouse and the other is the rooftop bar with amazing views of NYC. In the winter this is a heated rooftop so you could feasibly wear one of the complimentary robes and slip outside into a heated space. Is still chilly though. The place gets super packed on the weekends but the music is usually very good and the crowd very pretty. The drinks are where they hit you though. They are fairly expensive- luckily i seldomly do. The price i would say its average for top NYC lounges. If you want to eat the food is not terrible but i wouldnt recommend it. The best thing about the place is the incredible atmosphere...

Great Rooftop Bar & Lounge Aug 18, 2009
Expensive and mediocre drinks but the skyline view of Manhattan is worth a visit.

A 360-view of Manhattan can be seen from its rooftop with the Empire State Building the main view makes this rooftop bar a great place to visit. They also have a lounge below for an indoor feel for those who prefer a more swanky environment.

Open everyday from 4pm to 4am, the crowded is ecclectic from after hours workers, tourists, or just happy hour crowd. It can get fancy towards the night - after 10pm - as New Yorkers dress up for a night out.

Drinks are overpriced and mediocre from $8-14. A mojito is about $13 with their specialty cocktails at $14.

I recommend the beer ($9 a glass) or wine instead of their cocktails. For food, I highly recommend the lamb tea sandwich ($10) - it's delish!

Avoid 230 Fifth Aug 11, 2008
08.08.08 A night I will not forget. I went to 230 Fifth, a swanky roof top bar in Manhattan to meet some colleagues, one of whom was celebrating her birthday. I arrived and the guy working the door, a white man, stopped me as I tried to enter. He asked me if I had a reservation. I gave my colleague's name. He said there was no reservation. Without a reservation I would not be getting in. I watched as several white people went in with no problem and no reservation. There were 5 of us. 3 women 2 men all dressed very nicely and all BLACK. We asked again if we could join or colleagues and were told the only way we could get in tonight is if we get table service. Which would mean spending 300 dollars for a bottle of vodka. We reluctantly agreed. We moved to the line for the table service. We stood there for at least 15 minutes and watched as several small groups of white people all different ages, some dressed up, some carrying shopping bags from Bloomingdale's and Old Navy went in without a reservation. The same guy at the door didn't even open the rolled up piece of paper in his hand. It was quite clear we were being judged by the color of our skin. We were the ONLY people on the table service line. We asked if there was problem. He said the table service would be 300 dollars. Which we had already agreed to pay. He then said he needed a credit card and it would charged for the full 300 dollars BEFORE we could enter. We again watched as several small groups of white people were let in without a problem. The ONLY other people not allowed in were a small group of BLACK women. Finally were let in with a escort who he held my friend's credit card hostage. We stood by the special elevators for table service and watched again as white people were let in without a problem including a colleague who was attending the same party. I have never in life been so disrespected! NEVER.

They made it quite clear they don't need BLACK people or want BLACK people to patronize their establishment.

After over a hour wait we finally made it to the roof top. I said hello to my colleagues but I left quickly. I was too upset to stay. Nor did I want to spend a penny in a place like this. We could afford to be there but they did not want our business and made it clear that the color of our money was not green.

Regardless of the color of your skin. Everyone should avoid 230 Fifth.

I go there quite often and I see any kind of people there , and any color or race .... I notice though that sometimes they try to ask you to get a table (when there are more than 4/5 people) ... afterall that's how they make money ...
my friends and I (once again mixed races and ages) have been asked for the table and once refused they made us wait a lil longer but we eventually got in...
I'm surprised you didn't use the "call your manager card" with the guy at the door , or why you didn't call your coworker upstairs to communicate with management ...

Overall this place is just too pretentious for me. But there is definitely a great view from the roof. I'd say go one time (if you don't mind spending $15/drink).

Finding 230 Fifth is a work of art itself, no signs or anything, simple look out for two small fur trees on the left hand side as you stroll northbound. Enter through a maze of corridors you will find the elevator and off you go.

Once at the top you enter a duplex bar / club / restaurant area, similar to what Penthouse looks like in London. Then stroll outside and wow! The view is amazing, palm trees dotted around the roof, the good looking New York jet set enjoying very expensive cocktails, the fantastically beautiful waitresses. It was divine.

The service was spot on, they are constantly walking around with snacks, mini burgers, Chinese bites.

The view, as you can see from the photos, in my mind, is one of the most impressive backdrops to any bar I have ever been two. This is a must when in New York.
