A 2-Story Outhouse - I kid you not Dec 18, 2010
Yes, there really is a 2-story outhouse located in Belle Plaine, Minnesota. And yes, I made a special trip to go see it :)
The double decker outhouse is located at The Hooper-Bowler-Hillstrom house, built in 1871 by Sandford Hooper. It was bought in 1886 by Samuel Bowler, who added rooms and a two-story outhouse to accommodate his large family. The Alfred Hillstrom family moved into the house in 1901. The City of Belle Plaine now owns the house and grounds, and it is maintained by the Belle Plaine Historical Society.
The upper story of the outhouse has 3 seats located against the back wall. There is a screened walkway from the upper story of the house to the outhouse. The lower level of the outhouse has 3 seats slightly forward of the back wall to allow "materials" from the upper level to fall behind the falase wall of the lower level. I was very disappointed when I peeked in the outhouse windows and saw it was being used for storage.
The house has tours on Sundays, 1:00-4:00 p.m, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and by appointment. I stopped by on a cold winter day and trudged through 2 ft of snow to get a peek at the outhouse.
